MFA (Multi-Factor Authentication)

What is MFA (Multi-Factor Authentication)?

Multi-factor authentication requires more than one proof of identity before granting access. A password alone is a single factor, and passwords get phished, reused, and leaked. MFA asks for a second proof of a different kind, so a stolen password is no longer enough on its own. Even if an attacker has the password, they still cannot get in.

The factors fall into three categories. Something you know, like a password or PIN. Something you have, like a phone running an authenticator app or a hardware key. Something you are, like a fingerprint or face scan. Real MFA combines factors from different categories, since two passwords are still just one type of thing. A banking app that asks for your password and then a code from an authenticator app is using two genuinely separate factors. Not all methods are equal. SMS codes can be intercepted, while authenticator apps and hardware keys based on standards like FIDO2 are far harder to defeat.

MFA is one of the most effective defences against account takeover because it breaks the most common attack path. Stealing a password is easy and happens at scale. Also stealing a physical device or a fingerprint is a different problem entirely, and few attackers can do both at once.

MFA (Multi-Factor Authentication) at Dallonses

When a product holds anything worth protecting, we build authentication that holds up. We implement MFA using standards like TOTP and FIDO2 rather than rolling our own, and we choose factor methods based on the real threat the product faces and the people who will use it. Strong security that no one can get through is a failure too, so we design the flow to be solid and usable at once.

This is part of how we approach web development and custom web applications. Authentication is core architecture, decided early, not patched on after launch. We have built login and access systems for products serving large user bases, where one weak point becomes everyone's problem, and that scale keeps the bar high.

Building a product that needs login people can trust? Let's get authentication right.
