Push Notifications

What are push notifications?

Push notifications are messages delivered to a device even when the app or site is closed. The user does not have to be looking. The message arrives on the lock screen or in the notification tray, sent from a server rather than pulled by the app.

The mechanics run through platform services. Apple Push Notification service handles iOS, Firebase Cloud Messaging handles Android, and the Web Push protocol covers browsers. Your server sends a payload to that service, the service routes it to the right device, and the operating system displays it. The whole chain depends on the user granting permission first, which is why how and when you ask matters as much as the technology. A delivery app telling you "your order is two minutes away" is push working as intended, timely and genuinely useful.

The difference from email or SMS is immediacy and context. Push lands instantly and ties back into the app with a single tap. The risk is overuse. Badly timed or irrelevant notifications are the fastest way to get an app silenced or deleted, so restraint is part of the design, not an afterthought.

Push notifications at Dallonses

We build push into mobile and web products where it earns its place. Order updates, time-sensitive alerts, the moments where reaching a user matters. The engineering covers token management, the platform services, and the server logic that decides who gets what and when.

The harder part is judgment, and we work through it with clients honestly. Every notification spends a bit of the user's patience, so we help decide what is worth sending and what is just noise. In our app development work, push is one piece of a larger system, wired into the backend so messages fire on real events rather than guesses. Done with care, it keeps people coming back. Done carelessly, it drives them away, and we would rather build the version that works.

Want to reach your users at the right moment without wearing out your welcome? Let's design it.
