Test plan

What is a test plan?

A test plan is the document that decides what gets tested before anyone starts testing. Scope, approach, schedule, environments, who owns what, and what counts as pass or fail. It turns a vague intent to "check the feature" into a clear agreement the whole team can point to.

A test plan is not a test case, and the two get confused often. The plan is the strategy: which features are in scope, which are deliberately out, what risks matter most, and what has to be true before release. A test case is one concrete check inside that strategy, a set of steps with an expected result. One plan holds many cases. Before a payments integration goes live, the test plan names the environments, the data, the edge conditions around failed charges, and the exit criteria, while the cases spell out each individual scenario.

Good plans also set entry and exit criteria, so a build doesn't enter QA half-built and doesn't leave it with known blockers open. That clarity matters most when a project has tight deadlines, since it stops the team from arguing about coverage while the clock runs. The plan is where those calls get made on purpose, in advance, rather than under pressure.

Test plans at Dallonses

We write the plan with the client, not for them. Scope and risk are decisions about the business, so the people who understand the business sit at the table when we set what gets tested first and what we can defer. The plan stays short enough to actually read and specific enough to act on.

From there it drives the work. Our quality assurance runs against the criteria in the plan, automated testing covers the repeatable paths, and exploratory testing handles the corners a script would miss. When scope shifts mid-project, and it usually does, we update the plan in the open so nobody discovers a coverage gap in production. The document earns its keep by staying honest about what we checked and what we didn't.
