What is NLP (Natural Language Processing)?
Natural language processing is the field of AI focused on getting computers to understand and produce human language. Language is messy, full of ambiguity, slang, and context, which makes it far harder for a machine than structured numbers. NLP is the set of techniques that bridge that gap, from parsing a sentence's grammar to working out what a customer review actually feels about a product.
It covers a wide range of tasks. Sentiment analysis judges whether text is positive or negative. Named entity recognition pulls out the people, places, and dates in a document. Classification routes a support message to the right team. Translation, summarization, and search all sit under NLP too. The field changed shape with large language models, which now handle many of these tasks through one general model rather than a separate tool for each. A bank scanning thousands of customer complaints to find the recurring themes is running NLP, whether through a classic classifier or a modern LLM.
NLP and LLMs are related but not the same. NLP is the broad discipline. LLMs are one powerful technique within it, and plenty of production NLP still uses lighter, faster methods when a full language model would be overkill.
