What is Google Cloud (GCP)?

Google Cloud Platform, usually shortened to GCP, is Google's public cloud. It runs on the same infrastructure that powers Search, Gmail, and YouTube, and it offers the full range of cloud services: compute, storage, databases, networking, and a deep bench of data and machine learning tools.

GCP competes directly with AWS and Microsoft Azure as one of the big three providers. Its standout pieces tend to be data and ML: BigQuery for analytics at scale, plus first-class Kubernetes through GKE, since Google originally created Kubernetes. Like its rivals, GCP spans the whole cloud stack, from raw virtual machines (IaaS) to managed platforms (PaaS) to finished services. Spotify moved its backend to GCP largely to lean on BigQuery for crunching listening data, which is the sort of workload the platform handles well.

Teams pick GCP when data is central to what they're building, or when Kubernetes and containers are the foundation rather than an afterthought. The pricing model and the analytics tooling often tip the decision.
